Chapter Thirty-One
Georgie and Dillon arrived shortly before three a.m. on Sonny’s island. They were escorted quickly into a black car and drove for what seemed like only a moment to a hideaway bungalow.
Georgie slowly walked up the stairs with Mia sleeping soundly on her shoulder. Dillon followed with their bags right behind her. The style was very relaxed, something Sonny promised his home would be.
He watched Georgie walk around silently, taking the whole sight in. He walked up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist. “Why don’t we go get some sleep?” he whispered in her ear. She nodded and walked up the stairs. Dillon sighed and carried their suitcases up the steps.
She placed Mia in Morgan’s old nursery. She looked around the room and smiled. Carly definitely had good taste. She kissed Mia’s forehead and covered her with a blanket.
Georgie slowly walked into the bedroom and pulled her pajamas out of her suitcase. She walked into the bathroom and quickly changed. When she opened the door she found Dillon already under the covers. She crawled next to him and snuggled close. He wrapped an arm around her and pulled her next to him. “I love you,” he whispered softly.
“I love you too,” she whispered back and closed her eyes, hoping to get some sleep.
When Georgie opened her eyes again, the bright sun shone through the sheer curtains. She rolled over expecting to feel Dillon next to her, but she was surprised he wasn’t there. She lazily climbed out of bed and tied her robe tightly around her waist. She walked down the stairs and into the large kitchen. “Good morning, Georgie!” Dillon said cheerfully. She sat down at the large countertop next to Mia’s high chair. “Good morning, sweetheart,” she said to Mia and kissed her forehead. Mia babbled quietly and munched on some cereal.
Dillon placed a mug of coffee in front of Georgie. She smiled at him and winked back at her. “What time is it?” she asked between sips.
“Almost ten thirty,” he said and placed some pancakes on a plate.
“Why didn’t you wake me?” Georgie asked taking a bit of food.
“Because you’re just too darn cute to wake!” he sat down next to her and kissed the top of her nose.
“So what are we doing today?” she asked him.
Dillon looked out the window and gave her a grin. “I don’t know about you, but the weather is gorgeous and the sun is shining, so I’m going to the beach!”
Georgie giggled. “That sounds like a great idea, however, I think we need to go shopping for a bathing suit for this little beach bum because I don’t think any of her summer clothes are going to fit,” she said and tickled Mia’s toes. Mia shrieked with laughter. Dillon wrapped his arms around Georgie and kissed her temple.
“I wouldn’t worry about that. I found a nicely wrapped package on the front porch this morning filled with summer clothing for this little one,” he pointed to the cardboard box on the couch.
“Where did that come from?” Georgie asked.
“Carly had it sent over,” he said simply.
Georgie nodded, “I should have guessed,”
Georgie and Dillon sat on the large wooden deck only a few feet away from a baby pool filled with a little bit of water for Mia to splash around in. They watched her contently as she sprayed water everywhere in her pink bathing suit with matching floppy hat. They both laughed as she squealed at the water.
The air on the island was warm with a slight breeze. They had spent almost the entire morning down at the beach tanning, playing in the water, and building sand castles.
Georgie had fixed them a light lunch and they were currently in two Adirondack chairs on the deck. Georgie was curled up reading a book she had packed in her bag, not quite paying attention to the words. Dillon grabbed a towel off the deck chair and picked Mia up. “I think it’s time for the little fish to take a nap. I’m going to go and get her ready for bed,” he kissed Georgie’s cheek and gave her a smile. “Good night sweetheart,” she called to Mia.
He walked down a few minutes later and sat down next to her. “What are you thinking about?”
She shrugged, “Just the past twenty-four hours,” she mumbled. He wrapped his arms around her and kissed her temple. “I’m so sorry,” he whispered in her ear.
She turned around and smiled at him “It’s not your fault, Dillon. I should have expected this to happen sooner or later. I mean you work for Sonny and Jason. It just took me by surprise. But the mob world isn’t predictable,” she got up from her seat and walked over to the deck railing to look at the ocean.
“Georgie, do you hate me?”
She stared at him, surprised by his question. “No, why would you ask that?”
“Because of my lifestyle and because of what I put you through last night. Georgie, you were so scared when I came home. It broke my heart to see that I had caused you that kind of pain. I am just so sorry,” he mumbled.
Georgie placed her hands on either side of his face, “Dillon, I will never resent you because of your job or the fact that we had to fly to a remote island in the middle of the night,” she chuckled lightly. “The thing I don’t get is why didn’t Sonny or Jason or anyone see this enemy? I’m surprised because weren’t they a little bit on alert from that note that was found on my car a couple weeks ago?”
Dillon ran his fingers through his hair and sighed, “Georgie, I wasn’t completely honest with you,” he began.
She turned around and stared at him, “What?”
“It’s all related, Georgie girl. The note on the car, the shooting, the extra body guards, everything. It’s all from the same person,” he explained, not looking at her.
Georgie was stunned. “But how…how do you know? Did Sonny call or did Jason?”
Dillon shook his head, “They told me last night that it was this enemy of Alcazar’s,
Carlo De Luca. He went after Alcazar to gain his territories. They think he’s the one responsible for Sage’s murder. And they think he’s after us because he found out that Mia is an Alcazar,”
Georgie stared at him in silence for a moment, tears in her eyes began to form but she refused to let them spill. “Why didn’t you tell me?” she whispered.
“I didn’t want to scare you, Georgie. I don’t want you to be worried about my job,” he tried to explain.
“Didn’t want me to worry?” she chuckled, “Dillon, I would like to know when my life is in danger!” she paused for a moment to collect her thoughts. “I just…I can’t believe you didn’t say anything. You lied to me. I can’t believe you didn’t tell me!” she screamed.
Dillon took a deep breath. The guilt on his face was apparent. “Georgie, I’m sorry. I was trying to protect you from my world,” he tried to soothe her.
“You were supposed to be different than Sonny and Jason. You and me, we were supposed to be different! Carly and Sam warned me that you wouldn’t communicate with me, but I thought they were wrong,”
FLASHBACK
“I did find happiness. I have two gorgeous sons and a wonderful husband and a great life. It took Sonny and I long enough to get here,” Carly sighed.
“What do you mean?” Georgie asked.
“I mean Sonny and I have had major ups and downs in the past. It’s not easy being married to a mob lord,” she explained.
“Or anyone in the mob. Jason and I have had fights, especially about kids. It took him a long time to warm up to the idea of trying for kids. He felt his life was too dangerous, but he didn’t want to change. Nor do I want him to. I think,” Sam said.
“Sonny is very intense when it comes to his business. He keeps me out of things. There have been secrets and fights over those secrets. They’ve come close tearing us apart a couple times,” Carly added.
Georgie sat there and soaked it all in. Her life was so perfect with Dillon. She knew about the danger. She knew what to expect. Or at least she thought she did. But Dillon was different from Sonny and Jason. He was the quirky film guy with crazy as hell hair. He loved to ramble about movie stars and take walks in the park with Mia. He made her romantic dinners of macaroni and cheese or spaghetti. He loved to eat cheese fries and pizza at Kelly’s after seeing a movie at the old theatre on Marigold Street.
That was Dillon.
His job didn’t define him, not like Jason and Sonny.
He would never keep anything from her.
She thought.
She hoped.
END FLASHBACK
He reached out to touch her arm but she pulled it away. “Don’t touch me right now!” she seethed. “I need to go inside. I just can’t believe you,” the tears were threatening to spill over her eyes as she bolted for the French doors.
Dillon watched her go inside.
Georgie laid on the king size bed staring at the movie on the television not really paying attention. She dabbed her eyes periodically. It had been an hour since she and Dillon had their fight.
Dillon ascended up the stairs quietly, as to not wake his sixteen month old daughter. He knocked on the door to their bedroom and walked inside slowly.
Georgie rolled over to see who was at the door and turned to look out the window. Dillon sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. He walked over to the other side of the bed and sat down.
“Georgie,” he said quietly. She rolled her eyes and didn’t respond.
He took a deep breath and tried again, “Georgie, I’m sorry. I’m truly sorry. I am,” he said. “I don’t know why I didn’t tell you. I sometimes forget how strong and brave you are. Georgie, just please say something. I’m so sorry,”
“I forgive you,” she murmured after a moment. She rolled over and stared into his brown eyes. He slowly crawled across the bed and wrapped his arms around her. He kissed her hair and ran his hand up and down her shoulder.
“Dillon,”
“Yeah,”
“I know you can’t tell me everything, but please don’t keep me in the dark completely,” she said quietly.
“I won’t anymore. I promise,” he said trying to convince her.
“Don’t make promises, Dillon. Just please say you’ll try,”
Dillon sighed, “I’ll try. I will honestly try,” he kissed her lips softly with both hands on either side of her face. He pulled away after a moment and looked at her beautiful face. He tucked a piece of her hair behind her ear.
