Chapter Ten: Practical Jokes aren’t always Funny
She left the penthouse close to seven. Sneaking in was easier then she thought and by the time she had gotten dressed and was on her way to school she had already missed half of first period. Walking up the stone steps, half hidden beneath graying day-old snow she ran her fingers through her hair. Her hands stuck inside her coat pockets, she sighed deeply as she walked down the empty hallway to her locker. As she retrieved her books and closed the metal door she saw another body coming through the entrance doors. He was out of breath and his face flushed as though he had been running. His hair was wind-whipped and desperately trying to be tamed beneath his black and white baseball cap.
“Chris?” She called out.
He looked up and gave her a distant wave as he rushed to class. She furrowed her brow not understanding what was going on. A few moments later she saw a few of the football players come in. They too looked a little winded but she didn’t know why. As the bell rang signaling the end of class she made her way to second period. She found a seat in back not wanting to be seen. She fidgeted with her pencil absently as she watched students file into the room. There was an unusual amount of chatter and she couldn’t help but overhear as a cheerleader and her friend took the seats a few rows ahead of her.
“So what’s going on?”
“From what I heard, they’re talking suspension maybe even expulsion.” The other girl went on not attempting to hide her excitement of knowing the school gossip.
“But they’re seniors and they’re on the varsity football team. Do you really think the principal is going to kick the entire team out of school? It was just a prank.” The girl replied.
“Just a prank? Disassembling the principal’s car is way beyond a prank! And you know who they’re targeting. They’re going after Chris the hardest because he’s the one they all look up to.”
At this Georgie perked up and listened.
“I heard that. But I mean it’s not legit right?” She asked.
The other girl shrugged. Before another word could be spoken the teacher walked in silencing any further conversation.
In the middle of second period the class was interrupted by the head administrator coming in. “Hello. What can I do for you?” The professor inquired.
“I’m here to escort Georgie Jones to the Principal’s office.” He stated looking around the room absently.
All heads turned to the silent girl in the back. Her eyes were wide with questions but she followed him without a word. The walk down the hall was eerily silent. She felt her mouth go dry and her throat close up as they entered into the principal’s domain. She saw Chris sitting in a corner chair. His green eyes caught hers briefly before he looked back down to the carpeted floor. She stood center stage it seemed as the elderly man sat behind his oak desk. There were papers neatly stacked off to the left corner, a stapler with a roll of tape off to the right. There were pictures of children and a few dogs lined up along the front and one of a woman looking to be around her late forties maybe early fifties staring at her with a pearly white smile. She cleared her throat.
“Please Ms. Jones, have a seat.”
She did as she was told folding her hands inside her lap. Once again she looked to Chris but he didn’t bother to look up at her. So she focused on the man in front of her.
“Now I’m sure that you have some idea why you’re here… This is a school after all and words seems to travel like lightening. So I will get to the point. At about 6:45 this morning I arrived at this school, parked my car and came into this building. Ten minutes later the security guard walked by my parking space with my car still in its original space in one piece. No more then seventeen minutes later, which is roughly around ten after seven, just a little after the beginning of first period, my vehicle was missing. Now that means whomever took my car couldn’t have been in first period. Now the car was found at seven minutes to eight, albeit not in its original form but disassembled and spelled out in parts was: ‘Ha! Ha! Joke’s on you!” He cleared his throat before he continued. “Now there were four boys missing from their first period class and present at the beginning of second. Now three of those boys have admitted to this atrocious deed that they liked to call a prank however Chris here has told me that he was not present. He has repeatedly remarked that he had nothing to do with it and says that you can vouch for him. Is that true? Now Ms. Jones I have known you since before you entered into my school. I have always admired your honesty and integrity and I would like you to think long and hard before you speak.”
She cut her eyes to Chris who was now staring openly at her. His green eyes that usually sparkled like emerald were wide and bright and clear as rain. He didn’t seem nervous only waiting. She swallowed hard.
‘…You will owe me…’
His earlier words rang in her ears causing her to close her eyes and swallow hard. She turned back to the principal and exhaled deeply. “Chris couldn’t have stolen your car or had anything to do with that prank because… he was with me.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”
“And what exactly were you two doing this morning that you both couldn’t make it to first period, if you don’t mind me asking?” He questioned.
She cleared her throat trying to get her breathing to slow down. “Well… he uh… actually wasn’t just with me this morning… but last night as well. He um… well he and I were together all night.” She rushed out trying to hold back the blush in her cheeks hoping that the principal got what she meant.
By the way he cleared his throat uncomfortably she realized that he did. It wasn’t the best lie but it was the only one that she knew of that would keep him from questioning her any further. She had never been good at lying and trying to come up with one right after the other would have only ended up in disaster with both of them probably getting into trouble. This was the best way to put an end to the questioning right then and there.
“Well I see… I… well… then if that is the case, I see no reason to hold Mr. Camrom accountable for those said students actions. You both may return to class.” He managed trying to ease the tension that was in the room.
Georgie stood up quickly making a hasty exit with Chris right on her heels. They got to the corner before he reached out and grabbed her arm. “Georgie… back there.”
“Just… don’t. I can’t right now.” She managed before walking away.
A few hours later the news was all over the school. Dillon waited patiently by her locker. It seemed that she had been avoiding him all day. Which she probably was, because the rumors that he had heard couldn’t have been true. Georgie Jones and the football quarterback, were together… were sleeping together.
He saw her before she saw him. She walked to her locker and by the time she noticed his presence it was too late to turn around. He stood up straight locking eyes with her. “Dillon.”
“You want to tell me what all this is about?”
“All what?” She asked reaching out to open her locker trying desperately to avoid his intense stare.
“Come on Georgie. Don’t do this. Don’t be the stereotypical girl. Don’t play games with me. Talk to me.”
“What do you want me to say?”
He exhaled deeply realizing that this wasn’t going to be easy. “Okay for starters last night, you were with me. We made love for the first time and it was…” He began but she put her hand up.
“A mistake. Last night was a mistake Dillon.”
He swallowed hard feeling the ache rise within him. He knew that they had moved quickly last night but his heart was in it. He couldn’t deny that. Last night he had been happy. Clenching his arms at his sides he gritted his teeth. “Why am I hearing that you were with Chris… I called you last night on your phone… you didn’t pick up and now today I’m hearing these rumors about you and him.”
“They’re not rumors.” She stated quietly.
“What?” He asked softly but then continued as if she were just rambling. “You left me last night… I get why you know. I do. I mean you couldn’t stay the night. It would have been too risky. So you went home.” It was more of a question.
She shook her head. “I didn’t go home.” She said. Her throat burned with tears.
“Where were you?” He asked.
The tears shined brightly in her eyes as she stared into him. “I went… I was with Chris.” She saw something inside of him break and felt powerless to stop it. “Last night after I left you… I went to Chris.” She whispered brokenly realizing that she was about to change their lives forever.

Chapter Eleven: You Lied for me I Lied for you; now what?
He sighed deeply trying to process what she was telling him. “What?”
“I said…” She began but he cut her off.
“I heard you, and you’re lying. Georgie come on, don’t do this.” He pleaded with her reaching out to touch her arm but she backed up into the locker.
“Don’t.” She stated.
Exhaling deeply he needed to keep his composure, he nodded. “All right. Okay… just… if you don’t want me to touch you, I won’t. I won’t touch you. I just need you to talk to me.”
“That’s what I’m trying to do but you’re not listening.”
“Because you’re not saying anything that makes sense!” He shot back trying to keep his voice down. The last thing that he needed was to cause a scene in the middle of the school hallway. “I mean come on Georgie. You really don’t expect me to believe that after making love to me for the first time… our first time, that you went to Chris do you?” He asked.
She shrugged as a response. “Georgie… why in the world would you go to someone like him? He doesn’t know you. You’re just tutoring the guy.”
She looked up at him and held his stare not saying anything. “You are just tutoring him, right?” He questioned seeing that she was holding something back. “Georgie?” He asked again.
“It’s more complicated then that.”
“No! No it’s not more complicated. It’s a ‘yes or no’ question. Are you just tutoring him?” When once again he was met with her silence he closed his eyes in frustration. “Okay… just…” He went to reach out for her out of instinct but then stopped himself. Clenching his fists he exhaled deeply with frustration. “So you left me last night… and did what? You went to him?”
“Yes.” She lied.
“Why?”
“Because I trust him.”
“Are you even listening to yourself? You sleep with me, and then you go to him because you trust him? Is that some round about way of saying that you can’t trust me?” He asked. Once again she remained silent. “What did you do with him?”
She furrowed her brow not understanding what he was asking. “What?”
“What did you do with him?”
“What do you mean, ‘what did I do with him’?” She asked.
“It’s all over school that you slept with him! Is that true? Did you sleep with him?”
She remained silent for a moment not believing that he could ask her that. It’s was one thing for her to go to someone else and talk with them…but to ask her if she slept with him… “That’s none of your business!” She bit out angrily.
“The hell it isn’t! You can’t come to my room and be with me and then go and spend the night with someone else?”
“Is that the kind of girl you think I am? You think I could just give myself to you and be with you in the most intimate way and then just arbitrarily be with someone else a few hours later?” She asked disgust lacing her tone.
“No! I don’t! But you’re running me around in circles! You’re telling me that you left me last night to go seek out some other guy that you might not be ‘just tutoring’ and you won’t tell me what you two were doing! And I’m hearing these rumors around school that you’re saying aren’t just rumors! What am I suppose to think?”
“It’s complicated!” She yelled forgetting where they were.
“Then explain it to me! You owe me that much!” He demanded.
By this time the two were the spectacles of the entire school and neither one of them seemed to be aware of it. She swallowed hard trying to figure out the best way out of this. Looking over her shoulder her eyes connected with the principal’s as he began making his way down the hall looking for the cause of this teen mini-drama. Turning back to the boy in front of her she realized that this wasn’t the right time. “I… can’t.” She replied her voice softer then before, her eyes burning with tears. Brushing past him she walked to her next class.
He watched her go until she disappeared around the corner. Reaching up he scratched the side of his head merely out of habit before turning back to the lockers. In a moment of complete adolescent anger he banged his foot into the metal before stalking out of school. ‘To hell with it!” Was his last thought.
By the end of the day the gossip and rumors had traveled up and down the school three or four times over. And if Georgie wasn’t too exhausted she might have been concerned. Coming to her locker she found Chris this time standing there waiting on her. She rolled her eyes as she came upon him.
“Hey…” He stated softly.
“What?” She asked.
“Nothing… I just… I mean I wanted to say thanks for covering for me.” He replied.
She sighed deeply. “Yeah well I owed you one right? I mean it may have cost me any kind of dignity that I may have had at school and my reputation is now forever tainted thanks to you but that’s what I get for aligning myself with someone like you.” She remarked bitterly.
He sighed and furrowed his brow. “Someone like me? What is that…”
Slamming the locker door shut she cut him off. “God what the hell were you thinking disassembling the principal’s car? I mean how funny do you think that is? You could have been suspended or worst; you could have gotten expelled! Not to mention I can never look any of my teachers in the eye again because they all think that I’m some typical high school girl who lost her virginity to some inane football jock!”
“First of all that was your decision to tell that lie to the principal! No one made you say those things!”
“If I hadn’t we would be both be looking at some serious academic trouble. In case you didn’t know, I’m trying to get into and Ivy League School. I can’t do that with detention, or suspension on my permanent record!”
“Yeah well I’m sorry that you’re not a better liar!”
“Yeah you would be!”
“Did it even occur to you that perhaps what I was doing had nothing to do with what those guys on the football team were involved with?” He asked.
She rolled her eyes. “Oh please Chris, I saw you! You weren’t in first period and when you did show up to school you were all out of breath and preoccupied and a moment later your friends came in. What do you think I am, an idiot?” She asked rhetorically.
“Yeah you might be! God you know when you asked me for my help I gave it to you with no questions asked. I didn’t even inquire about what you were doing. I trusted you enough to believe that whatever it was… it had to have been important. Why couldn’t you do that with me?”
“I saw you…” She began.
“You saw me,” he cut in. “… come in late. That’s it! I could have been anywhere, doing anything! I didn’t have to be with those guys. But what did you do? You just jumped to conclusions and right down my throat!”
“What did you expect me to do?”
“Ask me! If you wanted to know, all you had to do was ask! I would gladly have told you! But you don’t trust me! You just accuse people without even trying to listen! You know Georgie, you may be really smart and intellectual when it comes to books and academics but you still have a lot to learn about people and relationships!” He stated before stalking off.
Leaning back into the locker she exhaled deeply. ‘Could this day get any worst?’

Chapter Twelve: The Question of the day is…
The Quartermaine Estate…
He stood out on the grounds hurling snowballs at the mermaid statue in the center of the garden. For some reason hitting something made him feel a lot better. Picking up another wad of snow he packed it in firmly before reaching back and throwing it across the space in front of him and watching it hit the mermaid’s stone body with a definite thud. But even with the act he couldn’t shake the image of her out of his head… She was lying to him. But he couldn’t tell about what. They had gone in circles for the entire conversation and now as he stood there he didn’t know what to make of any of it.
“Hey what did that mermaid ever do to you?” Emily questioned with a small smile as she walked up on her cousin.
Looking over his shoulder, he rolled his eyes and shrugged but said nothing. Emily raised an eyebrow. “Woah… brooding in that typical Quartermaine, male way… must be something serious.” She stated. He answered by throwing another snowball. “Okay so you’re a Quartermaine which means that you don’t want to talk about… you just want to destroy the world and everything in it, right?” She asked rhetorically. Bending down she picked up a handful of snow and packed it together tightly before handing it to him. He took the snowball about to throw it but she put her hand on his shoulder and stopped him. “Uh-uh… over there.” She said pointing up high toward the furthest window.
He looked at her. “That’s grandmother’s window.”
“I know.”
“I can’t… I can’t hit her window.” He stated.
She nodded. “If it’s not so bad that you could bare to hurt grandmother… then it probably isn’t the crisis that you think it is… talk to me.” She remarked taking the snowball away from him letting it fall to the ground.
He sighed looking up at the evening sky. “Have you ever done something… in the heat of the moment and maybe it might have been to soon?”
“And now you regret it?” She asked.
He shook his head. “That’s just it… I don’t. I mean maybe I should. I’m young and I know that there are things that people say that we should wait to do and maybe they’re right but I don’t regret what I did.” He exhaled deeply as he contemplated what he was trying to say. “I just… I feel like I’m falling and the one thing, the one person that can keep me stable but… she won’t talk to me. I don’t know what I’m suppose to do.” He stated softly.
She stared at him. “What exactly… did you do Dillon?” She asked.
He looked up at her not saying anything but speaking volumes. She nodded understanding. “Does she; regret it?” She asked.
He shrugged. “I don’t know… She says it was a mistake you know… that it shouldn’t have happened but I can’t believe that. I was there with her… and my God Emily it felt right. For one moment in my life I felt like everything had come together and I was whole. I love her… and I know that she loved me… I mean how does that change in one night? People don’t just wake up one morning and decide to stop loving each other!” He remarked almost trying to convince himself rather then the girl before him.
She sat there trying to think of the right thing to say. “I don’t think they do. I think that if the love is real and if it’s true then it never really goes away. It may change you know. That happens, trust me… I know.” She remarked sardonically. “But I don’t think that’s the case for Georgie.” He looked up hearing her name. “I’m assuming that’s who this is, right?”
He nodded. “Yeah… but if it isn’t that… then what is it? She’s pulling away from me. I don’t understand it. I don’t know what to do.”
“Maybe she’s scared. You know maybe for her it was too soon. And that has nothing to do with loving you or not loving you. But more of what’s going on inside her. This is a huge deal you know? I’m assuming this was her first time?”
“Yeah… for the both of us.” He whispered.
She smiled. “Well see there you go. Now I know this is going to sound sexist but losing your virginity seems to have a little more significance for the female then the male. Not so say that both don’t cherish it and remember it for the rest of their lives but somehow it’s always more complicated for the girl you know?” She asked trying to make him understand. “And maybe for Georgie, someone who seems like she’s always on the right side of the tracks, perhaps she just needs some time to deal. The question here is, can you give it to her?”
Harborview Towers…
She trudged off the elevator sighing deeply. She looked up seeing Marco standing guard at the door. He smiled slightly seeing that at least she looked a little more put together then she did last night. There was more color in her cheeks and her clothes weren’t as disheveled but she still looked more tired then a girl her age should be. “Hey Mr. Marco…”She said softly trying to find some energy for her play-date with Michael. For a young boy he was extremely intuitive.
“Good afternoon Miss Jones. Go right on in.”
She gave him a halfhearted smile as she walked through the open door. As she removed her scarf from around her neck she heard Sonny come down the steps. “Hey how are you feeling?” He asked.
“Okay.” Looking around absently she furrowed her brow. “Where’s Michael?” Usually the boy was already running into her ready to do something worthwhile.
He sighed. “Actually I sent him to Bobbie’s. I uh… I wanted to talk to you.” Gesturing toward the sofa for her to sit she nodded as she did. Leaning down she began to unbutton her coat as he pulled something from behind the sofa.
“What’s the pro…” She never got any further as she looked up to see Sonny holding what looked to be every pamphlet on teenage sexual intercourse that had ever been invented.
“Okay before we get started just tell me this, did you use protection?”

Chapter Thirteen: Let’s Talk about Sex… Let’s Not!
She stared at Sonny with wide brown eyes not sure of what to say, hell she couldn’t even remember the question. He simply stood there holding his plethora of pamphlets waiting for her to answer. He cleared his throat after a moment and it was a small relief to see that he wasn’t as comfortable as he was trying to appear. “I… what… huh?” Was all she could manage.
He swallowed hard. What ever possessed him to do this was beyond his reasoning. At the time he thought that he was being a responsible adult to a troubled teenager but now he felt more like Carly when she was butting in.
“Look, it’s okay if you didn’t… you know use the proper contraceptives. I mean we can handle that. Look I have enough pamphlets here to get us through anything. You got questions, well I’ve got the answers.” He stated taking a seat beside her and beginning to lay them out onto the coffee table.
She felt her heartbeat speed up inside her chest and panic rise within her. “What? No! No! We are not having this conversation!” She stood up quickly and walked to the other side of the room. She began to pace trying to ease the red blush that crept into her cheeks.
“I know this hard for you but we have to get serious and responsible here. We need to discuss what happened that night.” He stated trying to take control of the situation.
She whirled around on him with astonishment in her eyes. “No we don’t! You don’t get to decide what I need to do. You can’t just… just assume that you can talk to me about this… especially like this. You can’t just ambush me like this! It’s not… well it’s just not… cool!” She threw out for lack of a better word.
“Neither is unprotected sex!” He remarked seriously.
“I didn’t have unprotected sex!” She shot back.
There was a moment of complete silence as they simply stood there on opposite sides of the room trying to deal with what was going on.
Sonny nodded running one hand over his face trying to gain some ground and control. “Okay… okay. At least we got that out of the way. I just… I was worried.” He remarked quietly.
Looking up to stare into his eyes she could see the concern shining in them and felt remorse for getting so defensive. “I’m sorry.”
Sonny shook his head as sort of a silent apology. “I didn’t mean to step on your toes about this. I just I’ve seen smart girls like you make wrong decisions and mess up their lives you know? I just wanted to make sure that you understood that we could deal with this… that you weren’t alone. There’s nothing more scary then thinking that someone you need isn’t going to be there to help you.”
She nodded. “I know… I know that you’re just trying to help.”
“Exactly. Look this is all new to me. I mean I have a sister and when she first came into my life I made a lot of mistakes. I tried to make decisions for her and run her life and it took me a while to realize that she wasn’t a kid you know. She didn’t need me to take care of her. I guess when I see you I kind of see the part of Courtney’s life that I didn’t have a say in, that I wasn’t a part of. I just wanted to be there for you.”
She let a small smile come to her lips. It was an odd feeling to have someone want to be there for her. Maxie was her sister and they had more fights then bonding sessions. And honest to God sometimes she felt like they didn’t like each other very much which made it hard to confide in her. But here at this moment she felt like she was really connecting. “Thanks.” She remarked.
He nodded. “So you know if you want to talk… I’m here. And so is Carly.” He added as an afterthought with a whimsical smile.
She laughed. They both could see just how Carly would help and it was truly laughable.
“I wouldn’t mind… talking to you about this… when I’m ready.” She stated softly.
“Okay… I can understand that… but you know if you want the pamphlets I could…”
She shook her head cutting him off. “Keep the pamphlets.” She remarked with a smile.
Later that day…
She felt her stomach do flip flops as she approached his house. Clearing her throat she raised her hand to the door and knocked. Sticking her hands in her pockets to guard against the cold she looked around aimlessly waiting. A moment later she heard footsteps and then the unmistakable sound as it was opened. Looking up brown eyes met green.
“Hey.” She stated.
“Hey back at you… what are you doing here?” He asked raising an eyebrow.
She closed her eyes and gathered up her courage. “You told me today that I should have asked you what happened today… well I’m here and I’m asking! Did you have anything to do with disassembling the principle’s car or not?”
He stared at her for a long moment before stepping aside. “You’re going to need to come in for this.” He motioned for her to come in.
She hesitated for only a moment before stepping over the threshold into what had to be considered the ‘Lion’s den’.

Chapter Fourteen: Even Silent Rooms have Stories to tell…
She shoved her hands into her pockets as she stepped over the threshold into his home. Her eyes scanned the hall noting all of the victorian paintings lining the wall. It was breathtaking. She barely noticed as he reached out to take her coat as she walked further inside. “Wow…” She breathed out amazed.
“These are beautiful.”
“Thanks… my mom has this thing for art… at least right now she does. Who knows; next week she might be onto something else… something more extravagant.” He remarked dryly as he hung up her coat and walked past her. “Follow me.” He stated casually.
She did as she was told albeit slowly still thoroughly transfixed on the old-style portraits. Coming into the grand foyer she looked up at the domed ceiling as the last rays of light shined through the glass casing. She had never been in a mansion except for when she went to see Dillon at the Quartermaine Estate. Both houses, in her opinion, ought to have their own zip codes. There was a wooden table in the center of the room with an arrangement of fresh roses. Reds mixed with white and pink stared back at her in all its beauty. Looking to the right there was a grand staircase that curved and trailed off into some up-stair domain that was left to her imagination. Huge windows were splayed out across the circular room presenting her with views from almost every angle. She had no idea how well off Chris Camron was. She sighed somewhat wistfully as she thought about her small house with her quaint room and no foyer.
“It’s not as great as you might think. It looks great but it gets really lonely sometimes. In a place like this you could probably get lost for days and no one would find you. Not that anyone would come looking for me anyway.” He muttered the last part to himself.
She looked over at him standing in the doorway to another room waiting for her, watching her as she admired his house.
“Is that why you were late to school? You got lost traveling from your bathroom to the front door?” She asked with a smile remembering why she had come to see him.
He raised a brow letting a ghost of a smile come to his lips. “Not that that isn’t possible… but no. Come on.” He gestured motioning with his hand. He stepped aside to let her pass into the library and closed the double doors behind them.
Turning he smiled as she let her eyes look over the multiple bookcases. “This has to be… the biggest library that I’ve ever seen… You know what I feel like?”
“What?”
“I feel like Belle from “Beauty and Beast”. You know when he takes her in and opens the drapes and everything…” She stated somewhat dreamily walking over to a section.
“So now I’m some overly-hairy four-legged animal with the diction of an English professor? Thanks for the compliment.” He remarked with a hint of humor.
Looking over her shoulder she pointed at some random text. “Can I?” She asked.
He stood there leaning against the back of the door with his hands tucked into his jeans. He nodded. “Go for it.”
She smiled like a kid in a candy store as she pulled the neatly bound book from its shelf and peered through it. “The Life of Mark Twain.” She read out loud. She sighed thinking back to Dillon and their conversation about his likeliness to Tom Sawyer. She shook her head and placed it back turning to look at Chris. “Sorry about that.” She stated.
“Don’t be. It’s nice to see someone else with a love for literature besides myself. I haven’t seen someone so interested in books since…” He trailed off making Georgie raise her brow.
“Since when?” She asked suddenly extremely interested.
He sighed walking over to the mini bar and raising a glass. “Do you want something to drink?”
She shook her head. “I don’t drink.”
“I meant a soda or water if you prefer or you know we do have juice.”
“Shut-up!” She remarked with a small laugh. “Yeah a soda would be cool.”
“What do you like? We got orange, grape, cream…”
“Cream would be good.”
He nodded as he poured them both a drink and then gestured for her to take a seat. As she did he sat across from her and they sipped in silence for moments until finally Georgie couldn’t take the silence. “Not that this isn’t nice and everything but Chris are you going to talk to me or what?”
“Andrea.” He stated.
“What?”
“Her name is Andrea… she’s the reason why I was late to first period.”
“Who is Andrea?” She asked.
He sighed as if giving the question some serious thought. “I met her about seven months ago at a book fair.” He smiled wistfully. “She was just hanging out in the Sci-fi section and I was there and I saw her and… have you ever met someone with whom you just clicked and felt like nothing else in the world mattered? I mean it feels like something is in the air and you can’t describe it and you can’t touch it but you know it’s there.” He remarked looking up at her.
She nodded. “Yeah… yeah I think I do.” She replied softly.
“That’s how it is for us. I see her and everything in my world just stops for a moment and I can’t help myself and it’s the same for her, I can feel it. And last night I was with her… in fact I was with her all night long.” He stated the last part quietly obviously revealing something extremely private.
She swallowed hard. “So then why all the secrecy? Why did you let me lie for you about us? Why didn’t you just tell the principal that you were with some girl all night?”
“Because she’s not just some girl. Do you know who the Sunnderfield’s are?”
She furrowed her brow vaguely remembering the name. “Yeah… I think so. Robert Sunnderfield, is the guy running for Mayor in Port Charles right?” She asked.
He nodded. “Yes, the first black man running for congress in our city. Not only is it a big thing because of his ethnicity but could you imagine if it got around that his seventeen year old daughter was having sex with some white kid who’s family has made it more then common knowledge that they don’t approve of his running for office?” He asked bitterly.
“Wait a minute; you’re family doesn’t want Robert Sunnderfield to run for office because he’s black?” She asked a little amazed.
He laughed scornfully. “Yeah that would be the jest of it. And it doesn’t end there… her father as nice as he is wouldn’t exactly be thrilled that his daughter is dating me. So we have to keep it a secret. That’s why I needed you today… that’s why I agreed to let you use me as a cover. As long as my parents thought I was being tutored by you, a nice little white girl, the commissioner’s daughter I could go out and see her when I wanted.”
She stared at him for a long moment. “Is she worth it?”
“More then you know.” He stated honestly.
She smiled. “I’m sorry… about jumping to conclusions today. I’m sorry that I didn’t trust you. I really am.”
He brushed it off. “Don’t worry about it. If I had been in your shoes I probably would have thought the same thing.”
“So does anyone else know? I mean like your friends?”
“No… I mean I love the guys and everything but guys will be guys and I can’t risk that… she’s too important to me. I don’t want to jeopardize her dad’s campaign anymore then I am.” He stated. “So what do you say? Will you continue to be my cover for my family?”
“Sure… you don’t even have to ask.” She smiled taking a sip of her soda.
He sighed. “So… now that I’ve told you where I was… are you going to tell me where you were?”
And then suddenly the room got extremely quiet…
Later that night…
Georgie came through her bedroom door completely exhausted. Between her conversation with Sonny and then Chris, the only thing she really wanted to do was collapse onto her bed and never open her eyes again. As she flipped on the light she almost jumped out of her skin when she saw Dillon sitting on her bed.
“Dillon! Are you crazy? Mac could have walked in here!” She screamed in a hushed whisper.
He shook his head. “I heard Maxie say he was working at the station all night.” He remarked. “We need to talk.”
“It’s late.”
“I don’t care.” He shot back.
“Dillon I don’t want to do this right now… not here.”
“You know that’s all I’m hearing from you. ‘Not now Dillon’ or ‘It’s complicated’. Well you know what Georgie for that past few days maybe even week; you’ve been giving me the run around. You’ve been dodging my questions and me. You won’t give me a real answer or just talk to me. Well I’m done! We have been playing by your rules and I’ve been doing my best to keep up but I’m done! You and I made love last night and that changed everything. My heart is on the line here and I’m not leaving here until we talk about it!”
“And what if I can’t give you answers?”
He shrugged making himself comfortable on her bed. “Then I guess I’m spending the night!”
She shook her head. “You’re being such a jerk!” She stated walking over and grabbing his arm. “Get off of my bed right…” She never got the chance to finish as he reached out and took her other arm and pulled her down on top of him.
Looking in her eyes he held her close to him. “And you’re scared… I don’t know why but you are. I can see it in your eyes. You want to talk to me… you want to tell me something. Tell me.” He whispered. Their faces were so close that she could feel the warmness of his breath against her lips. His hands were pressed into her back holding her there. She could feel the heat between them as her heart pounded inside her chest. She swallowed hard wanting so badly to just let it all go… to just confide in him.
“Dillon…” She began.
“I’m not going anywhere. It’s just you and me… no interruptions. Talk to me… tell me.”
Once again she found the room extremely quiet…

Chapter fifteen: Lies told for your own Good are no Good
He stared at her waiting for her repsonse and she stared back at him trying to think. It was as if they were caught in a staring contest; both of them waiting for the other to make the first move; whether it was to surrender or pounce neither one of them were sure. But someone had to move...
Georgie sighed and rolled her eyes but said nothing as they remained in their position on her bed; her body resting on his where he had trapped her. His fingertips tapping softly on her back. The imprints pressed gently on her sweater and he swore it felt as if he were playing some instrumental notes on her body... and perhaps in her own way she was his instrument; she was his way of expressing himself; she was his muse. Those brown eyes and that small mouth that spoke volumes... so close. All he had to do was move an inch closer and they would kiss and he was tempted... so damn tempted.
But that wouldn't solve anything. Kissing now couldn't fix whatever problem was between them. It wouldn't explain why she kept pulling away from tell him what was going on between her and that damn football jock Chris. He had to know. So he relented finally and released her from his grip.
For a moment she didn't move but stayed where she was as if she couldn't process his motives but then she leapt from the bed and across the room. Foldinig her arms across her chest she stared at him.
"Georgie..." He began.
"I want you to leave."
"We can't leave it like this. I need to know what's going on. I need to know what you're thinking... what you're feeling." He stood up and took a few steps closer.
She shook her head. "Why can't you just..." She trailed off.
"What? Why can't i just what?" He asked earnestly. "Tell me what you want... talk to me baby." He whispered.
She stared at him feeling tears well up inside her wanting to fall into him but she couldn't. Not now. "Why can't you... just be like other guys?"
"What?" He asked perplexed. "What does that mean?"
"After a guy and a girl hook-up, when it's over the guy usually leaves! He's not hounding the girl with all this... all this crap!" She stated waving her hands in the air dramatically.
"Crap? My love for you is crap?"
"YOu know what I mean."
"No I don't! Tell me what the hell you mean because I'm really confused. I love you. I want you. And you're right I'm not like other guys because I respect you!"
"But I don't! I don't love you! I don't want to be with you! I don't want this anymore. I don't want you..."
And suddenly everything was quiet... everything had changed.
