Chapter Thirty
Elizabeth wasnt breathing. The din of nurses, doctors and rescue workers buzzing in her ears grew fainter. Black spots danced across her vision and she blinked in surprise. The breath she forced into her lungs hurt and the noise of the ER crashed down on her.
But she never, even for a second, tore her gaze away from the swinging double doors that Jason would come through. One way or another. Part of her tried to find him-with her heart, her soul, whatever it was that kept them so connected over years, distance and time apart. She couldnt feel him. There was too much going on around her, too much fear keeping her from focusing on the part of him she carried with her.
Hes gonna be okay, Brendas hushed whisper did little to sooth her frazzled nerves, but she tried to smile anyway. Her friends gaze darted from the doors to Elizabeths face. Theyre both going to be fine.
Im sure, she murmured, unable to decide if she believed it. In the twenty minutes since the overworked nursing student had blurted out what little information she had and completely upended Elizabeths world for the second time in as many days, Brenda had guided them both to the vacant chairs in the waiting room. Nobody noticed them now, which was just as well. They less they were seen, the more likely someone would shed some light on what was happening.
Minutes ticked by and still nothing. Elizabeth wasnt holding her breath anymore, but the tightness in her chest only grew worse. Jason had to be okay. She needed him now, more than she ever had. Their child needed him. How unfair could life be, to take him away from them before he even had a chance to know?
Closing her eyes, she shivered and banished the traitorous thought from her mind. A doctor rushed past her, heading for the first emergency room. A second later the double doors burst open and a flood of rescue workers ushered a gurney in, making a beeline for the prepped room. For the first time in her life, Elizabeth wished she had Carlys sense of entitlement. She would have grabbed one of the EMTs by the arm and demanded they tell her every last detail of Jasons condition. In reality, she strained in her seat to see the face of the patient.
Elizabeth, Brenda hissed and once again grabbed her arm in a vice like grip. Swiveling in her seat, she faced the main entrance and for the second time stopped breathing. The double doors were thrown wide open and a bevy of rescue personnel and police officers swarmed through the narrow opening. In the midst, waving off the doctor that rushed to his side and pointedly ignoring the cops circling like vultures, was Jason. Standing, breathing, on his own. Alive.
Somehow, Elizabeth found her feet and called out to him, her voice weak and lost amidst the cacophony of other noises. Taking a step toward him, she tried again. Jason!
The cry had barely left her lips, when he looked up, electric blue eyes zeroing in on her like a beacon. His face was covered with soot and a gash on his jaw probably needed stitches, but in that instant he was the most beautiful thing shed ever seen. The tears shed been holding back burst through the dam as relief washed over her.
Unmindful of the people around her, Elizabeth shoved her way through the throng and into Jasons arms. Her enthusiasm rocked him on his feet and he had to take a step back, but the strong comforting arms shed been longing to feel for days wrapped around her and lifted her from the ground.
For a moment, she allowed herself to be scared and vulnerable. To completely and totally need the man who held her and depend on him for the very breath she drew. Burying her face in the crook of his neck, she inhaled the acrid smell of smoke, then the familiar scent of leather beneath it. Her lips were moving, mumbling words even she didnt understand.
Elizabeth, what-what are you, I cant hear you, baby, Jason whispered next to her ear. Loosening his hold on her only enough that her feet touched the ground, he brought a hand to the back of her head and ran his fingers through her hair. What are you doing here? How did you know-?
I didnt, she sniffed, her eyes still tightly shut, but slowly regaining control of herself. Pulling away from to see his face, she looked up and touched his cheek. Brenda and I were already here. Jason, are you okay?
Im fine, he replied automatically, but his voice was barely more than a rasp from smoke inhalation. Elizabeths stomach clenched and she frowned in concern.
Are you sure? she insisted, not caring that questions like these usually drove him nuts. She couldnt stop touching him, stroking his rough cheek.
He nodded succinctly and she knew that was the last shed get from him on the subject. The concern he should have had for himself was already turned to her. Why were you and Brenda here already? Is-is something wrong? Did Courtney try something while we were gone?
Elizabeth blinked at the rapid fire questions and the world around her began to fade back into focus. The rescue workers, the drone of the machines, the wail of a siren outsidethe baby. Had she really almost forgotten?
Its not Courtney, she assured him, dropping her hand and gripping the dirty leather of his jacket with suddenly cold fingers. Jason, theres something I have to tell you. I-I really didnt think itd be like this, but-.
The doors swung open again, another gurney was wheeled in and Jason pulled Elizabeth out of the way as the medical workers swarmed the unconscious occupant of the stretcher. This time, she didnt have to strain to see the identity of unfortunate soul. The moment recognition washed over her, all thoughts of the baby vanished and she would have collapsed to the floor if someone hadnt been holding her up.
Oh my god, she breathed, clutching at Jasons hands where they locked around her waist. She followed the progression as the gurney made its way to an open emergency room. Before the curtain cut off her view, she caught one glimpse of an uncharacteristically ashen face.
Hes gonna be okay, Jason whispered fiercely in her ear, as close to a promise as hed ever given her. Rather than answer-because she doubted she could find the words to speak if she tried-Elizabeth let her eyes drift to Brenda. The former models olive skin was pale, even in the florescent light of the ER. She hadnt risen from the chair when Jason had entered the room, but now she stood slowly on legs that were visibly shaking, and stared at the curtains.
Come with me? she asked needlessly and took hold of Jasons hand. Weaving her way through the tight cluster of people crowding the waiting area, she fought her way to Brenda. With a tentative hand she touched the other womans shoulder and jerked her arm back when she visibly jumped. Elizabeth swallowed and looked to Jason for help.
Brenda. Sonnys going to be okay, he repeated. Elizabeth watched her friend in agony as she stared bleakly at the curtain her brother had disappeared behind. She didnt know if Brenda had heard Jasons assurance or not.
What happened? Elizabeth asked quietly.
Jason sighed and wrapped an arm around her waist again. She leaned against him gratefully. I dont know. Sonny and I got back from the island a couple hours ago. We stopped at the warehouse, talked for a few minutes. I was outside the main offices talking to JohnnyNext thing I knew, the building was coming down around my head.
Elizabeth felt numb. The fear and paralyzing anxiety had given way to a languid acceptance of everything being thrown at her. How did you get out? He hesitated and she turned her head to look him in the eye. Jason? How-.
Luck, he admitted and she winced. She didnt want to hear that anything but his incredible survival instinct had pulled him through this. The blast threw me clear of all the worst of the debris. I was able to get to Sonny and pull him out.
Was he awake? Brenda spoke suddenly in a whisper and again, Jason hesitated.
No.
Brendas shoulders slumped but that was the only outward sign shed even been listening. Her reply was soft and pained.
Oh.
~*~
What felt like hours later and despite his own lack of injuries, Jason was still sitting in the waiting room outside the ER at General Hospital. Elizabeth was snuggled securely against his side, silent as she idly toyed with the zipper of his jacket. She hadnt voiced it, but he knew she had been terrified only a short time ago and was still scared now. He wished there was something he could say to take some of that fear on his own shoulders, but until they got word that Sonny was going to be okay, there was nothing he could do.
The traffic in the waiting area had died down and Brenda had nearly the full length of the room to pace as she impatiently kept her mouth shut and glared at the closed curtain hiding Sonny from their view. For awhile, she hadnt moved, just stood by the chairs and ignored Elizabeths attempts to get her to sit down and wait with her. When the crowd cleared, she began her pacing. Jason was getting dizzy just watching her.
Whats taking so long? she muttered. Its been hours.
Jason opened his mouth to point out it had, in fact, only been half an hour, when he felt the press of Elizabeths hand against his thigh. Frowning, he looked at her and saw her shake her head in warning.
Im sure theyll tell us as soon as they know something, she offered. Brenda either didnt hear or didnt care because she didnt even pause in her lap around the chairs. Jason shook his head. And he thought Carly was bad. Elizabeth stretched taller in her chair to whisper in his ear. Now would be a good time to play nice.
I am being nice, he insisted.
Shes scared, Elizabeth explained needlessly, her own worried eyes darting toward the blue curtains and back again.
So are you, Jason pointed out, pressing a quick kiss to her crown before smoothing over her hair with his hand. He let his fingers wind around the thick locks.
Yeah, wellits not every day your brother is brought to the emergency room, she sighed and leaned into his touch. Even in my world.
Your world?
A wry smile touched the very corners of her lips. Yeah. My world, your worldthe life or whatever you want to call it.
Ive justnever heard you call it your own before, he said quietly, wondering if he should feel ashamed that the simple way she owned it warmed him. Shouldnt it appall him that she excepts the danger and the violence so readily?
Well, it didnt use to be, she shrugged and leaned her head against his shoulder. But even if we werent together, Sonny would still be my brother. Theres no way I could get out now-even if I wanted to. Which I dont.
Closing his eyes, he buried his nose in her hair and to his surprise, actually managed to chuckle before it turned into a cough that hurt his abused throat. I know. You dont have to keep assuring me.
Old habits die hard, she mused. Quiet resumed, save for the measured tattoo of Brendas heeled boots on the tiled floor. Jason didnt move as he let Elizabeths familiar, comforting scent surround and sooth him. She abandoned the zipper and her hand crept into his. I was scared, though.
I know, he lifted his head and found her regarding him with shining eyes. Im sorry.
She licked her lips and squeezed his hand tighter. You dont have to be sorry. Youre safe now. Ive done this before. I-I know I kinda lost it for a minute, but I was just-Ive been waiting for you to come back so I could tell you something, something important and then suddenly, there was this catastrophe and I might never see you again.
With effort, he held back the warning he wanted to issue-the gloom and doom of how it would probably happen again-and instead focused on brushing a strand of hair away from her face. There were smudges of soot on it from brushing against him. He would have tried to wipe those stains away too, but he knew in his current state, hed just make it worse. What do you need to tell me?
What?
You said youd been waiting to tell me something. Something important, he reminded her when she gave him nothing but a blank look. Then suddenly the pieces clicked into place and both fear and excitement colored her gaze.
Yeah, I she licked her lips his eyes dropped involuntarily to her mouth. He hadnt kissed her yet.
Hold that thought, he murmured and captured her mouth with his own. Soft and sweet, her lips were like a balm to his scorched skin. Mindful of where they were, he stopped at just a taste, promising himself more when he didnt have to worry about a thousand eyes scattered around the hospital.
Nonetheless, he was still a little breathless when he pulled away and Elizabeth didnt open her eyes immediately. Pressing one more quick kiss to her lips, he prompted her. Now what were you saying?
I-.
The double doors flew open, crashing against the walls as another crew of rescue workers flooded the waiting area. The relative calm was destroyed and once again the place resembled a war zone.
The doctors coming, Brenda hissed urgently, dragging Elizabeth to her feet. Jason stood slowly, wincing at the ache that radiated from sore muscles in his back and shoulders. If the pain was this bad now, he didnt even want to think about what it would be later.
The approaching doctors face was set in a grim mask as he wove his way with ease though the throng of newly arrived patients. Jasons focus shifted away from himself as he drew up behind Elizabeth to hear the fate of the only family hed ever known.
~*~
Jason, for the last time, you need to leave, Brenda cried, running both hands through her hair and clutching her pounding head. The headache had come on hours ago, but as soon as the doctor had assured her Sonny would live, it had grown exponentially. Like the relief had broken through her walls like water through a dam.
Whats your problem? Jason snapped, the soot and grime of the fire still lingering on his clothes and face, along with the acrid scent of smoke hovering around him.
She sighed and dropped her hands to her sides. Look, its not about you, okay? I just really think it would be a good idea for you to take Elizabeth back to the penthouse. The enforcer eyed her warily and Brenda wanted to curse. The man never took anything at face value. Come on, Jason! Sonnys going to be fine. He's been awake. You talked to him. He can't remember a damn thing right now and he's just going to sleep all night. Im more than capable of sitting on my butt beside his bed and making sure hes got everything he needs. You dont need to be here.
Do you want me to ask Elizabeth to leave her brother or should I just go in there and throw her over my shoulder kicking and screaming?
I dont think that-, she paused suddenly and her jaw dropped. You just made a joke.
Jason rolled his eyes. Brenda-.
No, dont Brenda me, you made a joke, she insisted. Crossing her arms over her chest she raised an eyebrow and allowed the hint of a smile tugging at her lips to show. Are you sure you didnt hit your head or something in that explosion?
Yes, he answered succinctly, but the stoic exterior failed to completely mask the humor behind his eyes. Brenda realized, with a jolt, that the easy camaraderie felt more familiar than the bickering had a moment ago. But that didnt change the fact that Elizabeth didnt need to deal with the stress of the hospital or, judging from his attitude, that Jason still had no clue he was going to be a father.
Look, Jason. I think it would be a really good idea for you to take Elizabeth home, she tried again, choosing her words carefully. She glanced over her shoulder into Sonnys room where Elizabeth was sitting at her brothers beside. The poor girl looked as relieved as the rest of them, but she was ready to drop on her feet. Turning back to Jason and meeting his gaze head on, she lifted an eyebrow in earnest. In fact, I think its really, really important that you do.
Whats going on with you? Jason frowned and mirrored her gesture, studying Elizabeth for a moment before stepping closer to her.
This isnt about me, she promised, then punched him on the arm when he snorted in disbelief. Seriously, Jason. This is about you and Elizabeth.
What about me and Elizabeth?
Oh my God, youre impossible! she cried again, the earlier feeling of familiarity and ease morphing back into exasperation. Cant you please just take my word for it? Elizabeth has been dying to see you for the past few days. She already thought something terrible had happened to you when we heard about the explosion. So, will you please take her home? Shes got something to tell you. And dont ask me what, because I refuse to ruin the surprise.
That seemed to do the trick. Jason hesitated, obviously wanting to protest, but the sight of Elizabeth framed in the open doorway of Sonnys room changed his mind. Taking a few steps toward her, he braced his arm on the doorframe.
Elizabeth? She looked up away from Sonnys sleeping form and Brenda saw the question in her eyes. Wanna get out of here?
Even in the hallway, Brenda could see how much the idea appealed to the younger woman. Sensing her apprehension at leaving her brother, she brushed past Jason into the room. Im not going anywhere. Sonny wont be alone.
I know. And hes going to be fine, she echoed the words of the doctor. Cautiously, her pale hand crept toward that of her brother. She didnt touch him, stopping just short of his still fingers.
Silently, Brenda offered up a prayer. Please dont make me have to go through the same routine with this one. She neednt have worried.
Elizabeth? Jason said again. That was all it took. The one word request from his lips. Elizabeth met his gaze, the dark smudges of ash and soot making his blue eyes stand out even more than usual. Brenda watched with no small amount of longing as they communicated without words. All lovers had that sense of awareness, but it had been a long time since shed seen two people share a connection so strong. Even longer since shed felt it herself.
Alright, Elizabeth agreed, rising from the chair by the bed and joining Jason in the doorway. Her hand found his, but she turned her attention to Brenda. Youll call if anything happens.
Of course, she nodded. In another few moments, they were gone and she was alone in the room. Well, not entirely alone. Sinking into the chair at the bedside, she observed the sleeping form of her former fianc. Just the two of them. Alone. Her stomach flipped. What the hell had she gotten herself into?
~*~
Elizabeth walked into the dark penthouse, letting Jason flip the switch for the lights. Without even bothering to take off her jacket, she collapsed on the leather couch. Theyd taken the limo home from the hospital. Shed been relieved to see its large bulk waiting for them. Explaining to Jason that the reason she couldnt ride his motorcycle was because she was carrying his child wasnt exactly the way she wanted to broach the subject of her pregnancy.
Shrugging out of his leather jacket with obvious discomfort, Jason tossed it over the desk chair by the door and joined her on the couch. Elbows on his knees, he regarded her with concern. Howre you doing?
Shouldnt that be my line? she asked, reaching out to brush her fingertips over his cheek. Even that small amount of contact sent a shiver through her. She felt starved for his touch, but giving into the desire to crawl into his arms seemed too overwhelming to fully grasp.
Rather than answer her directly, Jason cleared his throat and stared down at his soot covered hands. ElizabethBrenda told me-.
Elizabeth stiffened, her eyes wide. What? She told you? she leapt from the couch like shed been burned, instantly putting an ocean of distance between them. The warm comfort of being close to Jason bled away until she was left with the cold anticipation shed been trying to master ever since shed learned of her pregnancy. Blinking, she repeated her stunned question. Brenda told you?
Confusion etched lines deep in Jasons brow. Yeah, she said-.
I cant believe her, Elizabeth fumed, pacing aimlessly until she caught sight of the pool table and made a beeline for it. The colored balls were scattered about the surface and she took great satisfaction in slamming the wooden triangle on the felt to rack them up. She knew I was going to tell you. I promised her Id tell her about the baby myself and she told you anyway. Does she think Im four? That Id chicken out? Its not like Im really going to be able to hide it from you, am I? We live under the same freaking roof.
Sometime during her diatribe, while her back was turned, Jason had abandoned his seat on the comfortable leather couch and joined her at the pool table. Unfortunately, it took Elizabeth spinning around in a huff and running directly into his broad chest for her to notice.
Jason grabbed her wrists, gently but firmly trapping her against him. She found she couldnt speak, pinned by the unwavering weight of his gaze. The bewilderment in his eyes only made her feel more unbalanced.
Elizabeth, what are you talking about? What baby?
Elizabeth wasnt breathing. The din of nurses, doctors and rescue workers buzzing in her ears grew fainter. Black spots danced across her vision and she blinked in surprise. The breath she forced into her lungs hurt and the noise of the ER crashed down on her.

What baby?
